IMDG Regulatory Classifications

Dangerous Goods Classification (IMDG)

The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code is the definitive legal instrument for the maritime transport of hazardous materials. Dictated by SOLAS and MARPOL conventions, strict adherence to these classifications is a mandatory requirement for global supply chain security.

Substances posing mass explosion, severe projection, or fire hazards.

Flammable, non-flammable cryogenic, and toxic gases posing inhalation hazards under pressure.

Liquids yielding combustible vapors, categorized by low, intermediate, and high flash points.

Highly combustible materials, spontaneously combustible substances, and materials that emit flammable gas upon contact with water.

Substances that provoke or enhance the combustion of other materials by yielding oxygen.

Biohazards and pathogenic materials posing severe threats to human health during transit.

Substances emitting ionizing radiation.

Materials causing severe, irreversible degradation to human tissue or transport infrastructure (steel/aluminum) upon contact.

Regulated hazards not covered in primary classes, including marine pollutants and elevated-temperature materials.

International Commerce Terminology Incoterms

Note: DDU was officially replaced by DAP in the 2010 Incoterms update. We retain it here as it still appears in legacy contracts, but its status must be noted.

Incoterms: Risk Transfer & Liability

Developed by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Incoterms universally dictate the exact transfer points of risk, cost, and liability between buyer and seller. Mastery of these terms is critical for profitable global trade.

Maximum buyer liability. The seller makes goods available at their premises; the buyer absorbs all transport, customs, and freight risks.

The seller is responsible for export clearance and delivering goods to a carrier nominated by the buyer at a specified location.

The seller clears goods for export and pays the freight to the named destination. Risk transfers to the buyer the moment goods are handed to the first carrier.

Identical to CPT, but the seller is legally obligated to procure comprehensive transport insurance in the buyer’s name.

The seller absorbs all costs and risks to bring the cargo to a named terminal/port and unloads it. The buyer manages import duties.

The seller delivers goods to the buyer’s exact specified location, ready for unloading. The buyer executes import clearance and physical unloading.

Maximum seller liability. The seller covers all costs, including intermodal transport, import duties, and taxes, delivering the goods to the consignee’s door.

The seller places the cargo alongside the buyer’s nominated vessel. Risk transfers immediately upon placement. Ideal for non-containerized heavy lift cargo.

The seller bears all costs and risks until the cargo safely passes the ship’s rail at the port of origin.

The seller pays to transport the cargo to the destination port, but the risk of loss transfers to the buyer the moment the goods are loaded onboard the vessel.

Identical to CFR, but the seller must also procure marine insurance against the buyer’s risk of loss during carriage.

Legacy Term. The seller delivers goods to an agreed location in the destination country. The buyer assumes all import duties and subsequent transit costs.
